Land Rover has always been known as a company that lives on the forefront of off-road technology. At the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month, our favorite British automaker debuted a very special version of the Land Rover Defender. So today we want to take this opportunity on our blog to tell you all about the new Land Rover Defender All-Terrain Electric Research Vehicle.

We shouldn't get our hopes up that an electric version of the Defender will make its way to the Land Rover Richmond inventory of new Land Rover vehicles any time soon, but it is plausible that some sort of electric technology may make its way into an existing model in the product line. And that is something we can all get excited about.

To build this electric wonder, engineers at Land Rover chucked the traditional diesel engine for a special electric motor that has the ability to produce 94 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. The drive was controlled by a single-speed transmission and was powered by a 300-volt lithium-ion battery.

Head of Research for Jaguar Land Rover, Anthony Harper commented on the new Defender, saying, "This project is acting as a rolling laboratory for Land Rover to assess electric vehicles, even in the most arduous all-terrain conditions. It gives us a chance to evolve and test some of the technologies that may one day be introduced into future Land Rover models."1

You can experience all of the technological marvels that Land Rover already incorporates into its lineup of new SUVs by stopping by our showroom and exploring our inventory. You can test drive any new or used Land Rover we have in stock. Our knowledgeable staff is always willing to answer any questions you may have. Land Rover Richmond is located at 11670 Midlothian Tpke. Midlothian, VA 23113.
